Using Gentofte Libraries

The library is for everyone. It is free to borrow and use the facilities. Read the rules for using the libraries here.

Brug af biblioteket

Everyone is welcome at Gentofte Libraries. To borrow books, music, and other materials, you must be registered as a user. Please note that some of the library's services can only be used if you live in Gentofte Municipality.

How to register as a user

To borrow, reserve, and renew books, music, and other materials, you must be registered as a user. Your borrower number (CPR number) and PIN code are your access to the library's self-service machines, your borrower status on the website, and the library's digital offerings.

Register as a user at Gentofte Libraries

Once you are registered, your health card functions as your library card. Your account is personal, and you are responsible for the materials borrowed on it.

If you change your email or phone number, you must update your information. If you need help, feel free to drop by and ask the library staff.

People with temporary residence in Denmark must show either a passport, driver's license, diplomatic card, military card, or white card. Special rules apply for institutions. Ask at the library.

Loan period and returns

Icon Description

The loan period is normally 30 days, but certain materials have different loan periods. You can see your return deadline under your loans on the website, in the Library app, or on your loan receipt.

You can usually extend the loan period if the material has not been reserved by others. There is a maximum number of times the loan period can be extended.

You can print return receipts or have them sent by email. The return receipt is your proof that you have returned the borrowed materials. When returning, ensure that the materials you are returning match those listed on the return receipt.

You are responsible for regularly checking if you have registered loans of materials. You can also check your borrower status at the self-service machines in the library.

Renewing loans

Icon Description

You can renew the materials you have borrowed if they have not been reserved by others. You can renew your materials via genbib.dk, in the Library app, by phone, or in person.

You will need to pay a fee if the loan period is exceeded. Outstanding amounts may be transferred to the Debt Collection Agency.

Even if you are signed up for email reminders, it is still your responsibility to adhere to the return deadlines for your borrowed materials. The library cannot guarantee that emails will arrive on time.

Jægersborg Library, Dyssegård Library, Vangede Library, Ordrup Library, and Gentoftegade Library are key libraries. Here you can access the library even outside staffed opening hours.

During this time, the door is locked, and you need to scan your health card at the card scanner by the door to unlock it. Then you are ready to use the library on your own.

Show consideration when visiting the library

When you are at the library, you must show consideration for other users, and windows and fire doors must not be opened. Vandalism will be reported to the police and will result in a demand for compensation. Alcohol consumption is not allowed in the library.

When the library closes, you will hear a loudspeaker announcement, and you must leave the premises. The library is under video surveillance, and recordings are handled in accordance with applicable laws.

On special occasions, such as system updates, access may be limited or the library may be closed.

Exclusion, expulsion, and restrictions

Icon Description

At the library, you must always respect good order, consider other users, and follow the staff's instructions. If you do not, you may be expelled and excluded from using the library for a period.

You can also be excluded from borrowing if you owe 300 DKK or more in fees, if borrowed materials are repeatedly not returned, or if they are returned in damaged condition. Outstanding amounts may be transferred to the Debt Collection Agency.

In special cases and after a specific assessment, Gentofte Libraries may impose restrictions on an individual user's total loans, reservations, and renewals according to the Library Operations Regulations § 14.
